IBM IS HIRING
http://tinyurl.com/2n2ch

Fresh from a profitable quarter, IBM has announced plans to hire 15,000 additional employees worldwide. The hiring plans come just days after the company reported a 9.4% increase in fourth-quarter revenue, to $25.9 billion (see story), and predicted that 2004 would herald the return of the IT industry growth cycle. A representative for the company declined to say today where the jobs would be added. IBM currently has 315,889 employees worldwide, according to its Web site, and the new hires will bump it to almost 331,000.

Jobs for Life: but pay cuts for all
http://tinyurl.com/2qnar

In these times of economic rationalism, Nucor Steel is a dinosaur. This giant American company still refuses to lay-off or sack staff when times turn tough. Instead everyone from chairman down to cleaner takes pay cuts and waits for the good times to roll again. Richard Carleton visits a Nucor plant to see how this steel company thrives while the likes of BHP and Telstra take the other route and lay off staff in the thousands. He finds it's all part of a philosophy that starts with a management team who earn a relative pittance and flows onto the factory floor where productivity is God.

TIP: The best networkers are...

It does not matter when you start networking for your job. What matters is that you never stop networking! And may I suggest who the better networkers are? Those who GIVE more than they expect to receive. Usually I see this among the more savvy business developers, but some senior management types do this as well. They send me tips on who is hiring, who is firing, who just got funded or whom is on the edge of funding and most importantly, they steer me in the direction of someone I can assist. (I love those guys!) Sure its a backscratch fest and it may not pay off immediately, but it eventually it will. As long as you are helping people, people will feel obliged to help you. Its all Karma!

RED HOT CAREER MOVE!

Broadcast captioning (the words you see scrolling across the bottom of the TV screen for the deaf and hard of hearing) will be required by the federal government on all new programming by January 1, 2006. Today, there are about 500 people doing this kind of work, typing the words in real-time as they listen to a broadcast from their homes. But with the federal mandate, this workforce is going to expand incredibly by 2006. Who are these workers and where will they be coming from? They are almost all former court reporters that know how to use steno machines, and are certified by the National Court Reporters Association at up to 260 words per minute. The creation of new jobs in broadcast captioning is leaving a void in the courts, however. Twenty-five schools are currently offering two-year programs for what is called communication access real-time translation (CART), and the jobs can pay up to $100,000 per year.

Atlanta outpaces nation, rest of state in jobs growth

Lead Story

Atlanta outpaces nation, rest of state in jobs growth
The Associated Press - ATLANTA
http://tinyurl.com/3h96l

Atlanta continues to lead the nations cities in job growth, but the rest of the state lags behind, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Metro Atlanta added 68,100 jobs during the past year, BLS regional economist Michael Wald said. This November was the strongest increase since November 2000. The rest of Georgia added just 800 jobs, Wald said.

Meanwhile, the number of people filing unemployment claims continues to drop. Initial claims for unemployment compensation fell last week to 339,000, down from 354,000 the week before, the Labor Department said. The number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits rose slightly to 3.3 million, a sign that the job search remains difficult.

In Georgia, 2.2 million jobless claims have been filed during the past four years, according to Bobby Thomas, assistant labor comissioner. Through November, 555,451 claims had been filed this this year, he said.

HOT!

Last issue I pointed you to free webhosting that you can use to promote your resume. The downside to that is that your page will have to suffer forced advertising on your space. Not necessarily a bad thing, but why have it if you don’t need it? I recommend your checking out this website: http://www.1and1.com. They offer 300mb of space (that’s a lot!) for free without banners or pop-ups, but for a limited time only. *I think it stops the end of January 2004. Sign-up while its hot!

What is the URL for your resume? Don’t have one? You should, as recruiters use more than Monster to recruit candidates. Having a website for your resume is a must! Ever been to an expo or trade show? Chances are you have. Well, did you know that you have access the business cards of many of the attendees there? Check out Card Browser online. Imagine that you are a Security Analyst looking for work. With Card Browser all you do is type in the name of the company you would like to work for, a job title and voila; you have all of the contact information you need (maybe even their cellphone number!). Ask for a demo to see how it works. Maybe your jobseeker group can pitch in to buy the service for a month? Just an idea… http://www.cardbrowser.com

QUICK TIPS

Question: "How many job leads have you missed out on because of an outdated email?

How aggravating would it be to hear about a job you missed out on simply because you changed jobs and lost your email address? Or how about when you change your ISP and lose your coveted "AOL" address? One sure way to safeguard against that is to register your own domain name (like JimStroud.com-wink), but if you are technologically adverse (or just not geeky enough to set this up) there is an alternative.

Return Path
http://www.returnpath.com/
Return Path has a nice little grab bag of goodies. With this tool you can forward email from your old email address to your new one. Find email addresses for lost friends, notify contacts about your new email address and control your email such that you can see who has asked for your new email address and who you approved to have it.

Question: "How many contacts have you lost track of because of outdated emails?

Plaxo
http://www.plaxo.com
A very popular tool for this (if not THE tool for keeping contacts up to date) is Plaxo. They recently announced that in the six months following the launch of their flagship product in May 2003, more than 800,000 members in over 200 countries have downloaded and used Plaxo Contacts, which provides a simple and secure way to keep individuals' contact information up-to-date and complete.
